Empowerment of Traditional Craftsmen

Traditional craftsmen in jute and cotton play a crucial role in preserving cultural heritage and providing sustainable livelihoods. Skilled artisans transform raw jute fibers into durable products like bags and rugs using techniques such as weaving and stitching, promoting Eco-friendly practices since jute is biodegradable. Similarly, cotton craftsmen utilize traditional methods, including spinning, dyeing, and hand loom weaving, to create intricate textiles that reflect their communities’ rich narratives. By using natural dyes and techniques like block printing, these craftsmen not only produce functional items but also contribute significantly to local economies and promote sustainable production practices in their craft. In 2002, SAS started Shramik Kala in Madanbhavi, Mekalmardi, Rajankatti, and Kadkol. SAS trained 200 women in making Jute bags, Kruke bags, and other types of bags.

Present Condition:

  • Over 100 women are currently employed at Shramik Kala.
  • They now earn a daily wage of Rs. 300.
  • There is a growing demand for their products, especially at the international level.
  • Women actively participate in exhibitions to showcase and sell their crafts.

Now the work is managed by Unnati Handicrafts.
