Biogas cum Rural Sanitation

SAS is engaged in sustainable cooking fuel production and rural sanitation through the
construction of Biogas Plant cum Toilet Units for rural households for the last three decades. These units provide them easy cooking fuel, make their kitchens smokeless, reduce the work load of women and contribute to household and village sanitation and thus improve the livelihoods of poor rural households. SAS has constructed over 25,000 over biogas cum toilet units for the rural poor people over the last three decades.

SAS actively promotes biogas cum sanitation units in villages as part of its initiative to improve rural living conditions and support environmental sustainability. By integrating biogas plants with sanitation facilities, the organization addresses multiple issues such as lack of access to clean energy, poor sanitation, and waste management. SAS raises awareness through village meetings, workshops, and demonstrations, explaining the benefits of biogas units, which convert animal and organic waste into cooking gas and organic manure. This reduces reliance on firewood for cooking, lowers fuel costs, and helps preserve forests.

In addition to providing affordable energy, the biogas units are paired with toilet facilities, promoting better hygiene and reducing open defecation in rural areas. SAS also trains local masons and beneficiaries to maintain and manage the biogas systems, ensuring sustainability. By focusing on both energy and sanitation, SAS empowers rural families to lead healthier lives while contributing to environmental conservation and poverty alleviation.
