SAS has been promoting ecologically sustainable development through its micro watershed management program. The objective of the program is ‘water harvesting for a green and healthy environment with enhanced income generation opportunities and a united village community’. This program has arrested soil erosion, raised ground water tables and greened barren lands and wastelands with thousands of trees. For nearly two decades, SAS has transformed several villages through its micro watershed program. In these villages, on account of this program, families have easy access to drinking water, greater employment and income-generation opportunities.
SAS NGO Intervention:
- Watershed Development: Initiated in 1993 with surveys and technical interventions, including Continuous Contour Trench (CCT), Contour bund, Bench terracing, Micro catchments for sloping lands, Check dam, Percolation pond, Stone Barriers and tree planting.
- Infrastructure Development: Constructed wells, provided pipelines to households, established drainage systems.
- Advocacy and Support: Addressed water problems through pot marches and ensured proper documentation and support.
Present Condition:
- Water Supply: Regular water supply to households, though out the year clean water in the wells, regular supply of water, improved sanitation, and a clean environment.
- Agriculture and Economy: Increased groundwater levels, successful organic farming, and profitable vegetable and fruit sales. Households earn Rs. 50,000 to 80,000 from fruit sales.
Infrastructure and Housing: Increased number of pucca houses, domestic animals and diary activities.
