Street Plays / Kala Tanda

SAS staff realized the poverty and the struggle to live a better life related to lack of awareness on development and the strong clutches of superstitions and the land lords. Thus SAS formed a Kala tanda (Street Play Grope) and put up many shows covering more than 200 village in 90’s. The plays themed at Education, bonded labors, dowry, equality, moving away from the money lenders and other themes pertaining to the village life situation.

Past Scenario:

  • Lack of Interest in Education: Villagers prioritized earning a living over education.
  • Gender Bias: Education for girls was undervalued due to traditional beliefs about their future roles.
  • Misconceptions about Education: Belief that educated children would leave home responsibilities, including cattle care and farming.

SAS Intervention:

  • Street Plays/Road Shows: SAS organized street plays with 20-25 team members to deliver educational messages in an entertaining manner.
  • Humorous and Informative: The plays addressed key issues like poverty, superstitions, and the importance of education, combining humor with life lessons.

Present Condition:

  • Increased Awareness: Villagers responded positively to the street plays, which effectively communicated educational messages.
  • Shift in Attitude: There was a notable change in attitudes; people began valuing education more.

Education Participation: Increased enrollment of children in schools and a positive transformation in community attitudes towards education.
