Night Schools / Adult literacy

On 15th October, 1978, the first adult education center started in Kadoli of Belgaum Taluka for Dalit women. The second center was started in Bambarge and the third center was started in a very remote village Kattanbhavi. All these three centres were in Belgaum Taluka, but gradually the program extended to many more villages of the Belgaum District. This project got a boost when on 17th March, 1979, the Central government approved the grant for the organization to implement program under the National Adult Education program. From then onwards, SAS/JJ trained its staff and rural animators to conduct the adult education centers following the ‘conscientisation’ methodology expounded by Paulo Freire’s book, “The Pedagogy of the Oppressed”.
