Joint Village Forest Committees (VFCs) were local groups formed to help manage and protect forests in partnership with the government. Communities worked with the Forest Department to use forest resources responsibly, ensured sustainable use of wood, fodder, and non-timber products. In return, they helped to guard against illegal activities and assisted in forest restoration, such as planting trees and preventing forest loss. These committees also provided livelihood opportunities for local people, including marginalized groups, and empowered them to make decisions about forest management. The VFCs aimed to balance conservation with community needs for forest resources.
